This month’s sewing club activity is machine smocking.

“Sewing club” is the name we give to our informal sessions that focus on a particular stitching technique or a mini-project.

You don’t need to join any club: sessions are open to all. There’s no pressure to complete the project on offer. Bring your own sewing work, discuss it with others or ask our experts for help.

In this session, you can learn how to create a smocking effect using a standard sewing machine. Examples of this technique are shown in the picture.

You can create a medium-sized piece of smocked material that you could then turn into a purse or other decorated item.

All materials are provided. All you need to bring is a basic sewing kit.
